Why does silver tarnish?

Silver jewellery is the epitome of elegance and the silver items like vases, tea sets, bar sets etc. boast of class and sophistication. Over the years silver items have been considered the best for gifting purposes.
In spite of silver being a popular precious metal, what always comes to most our minds is that it tarnishes very soon. Tarnish happens because of a chemical reaction which occurs when silver products come in contact with humidity and chemicals that are present in the air. Sulphur is said to react with silver forming a chemical compound known as ‘Sulfide’, this leads to a dark coating over silver items.
When atoms of silver are exposed to oxygen they create a layer of silver oxide which causes the metal to rust. It is also said that the absorption of UV rays present in sunlight is another cause of tarnished silver.
Though silver tarnishes after exposure to the atmosphere, it can be removed by following easy steps.

1. Layer a big glass bowl or sink with aluminium foil and  pour boiling water in it.

2. Add 3 table spoons of baking soda and then soak all your silver products in it.

3. After 10 minutes, clean  the products and the tarnish will vanish.. Apart from this, you should store silverware or jewellery in air tight spaces away from humidity and sunlight.

Do not worry about tarnish in silver, with the right precautions and cleaning method you can restore the lost sheen of the items and make them look new again.
